How was Basketball Created?

The game of basketball was developed from DR. James Naismith, who was originally from Ontario, Canada, but moved to Springfield Massachusetts, where he worked at the YMCA training school in Springfield. He needed to come up with a sport to play in the cold Massachusetts winter for students of the School for Christian Workers to play indoors. James wanted to make a game of skill, not just solely relying on strength. So, he came up with the game of basketball. The first games of basketball were played with a soccer ball as the ball, and two peach baskets as the baskets. The game of basketball stayed like this for a long time, until it was finally changed into the game of basketball we know and love today.

  1. John, A very interesting start for the sport of basketball! What year was the game invented? I'd also be interested in learning about when basketball became a professional sport; when the professional leagues started, etc. Also, how has this sport caught on abroad? Are there any particular countries that enjoy the sport as much as the US? Can't wait to read the rest of your blog when you're finished!

  2. Wow, John, that Naismith guy was very clever! Back in his time I bet no idea was even similar to this sport. I wonder how he was inspired by a soccer ball and peach baskets, what do you think? Also, do you know when the game switch over from peach baskets to normal ones? I can't imagine the game staying so primitive for such a long time
