The First 13 Rules of Basketball

Here are three interesting rules from the first 13 original rules of basketball, which are different from todays rules in some cases. Tell me what you think about these three rules!

  1. If either side make three consecutive fouls it shall count as a goal for the opponents (consecutive means without the opponents in the meantime making a foul).
  2. When the ball goes out of bounds, it shall be thrown into the field and played by the first person touching it. In case of dispute the umpire shall throw it straight into the field. The thrower-in is allowed five seconds. If he holds it longer, it shall go to the opponent. If any side persists in delaying the game, the umpire shall call a foul on them.
  3. The umpire shall be judge of the men and shall note the fouls and notify the referee when three consecutive fouls have been made. He shall have the power to disqualify men according to Rule 5.

  1. This is a interesting idea, teaching the readers about the older rules; however this confuses me about the rules of basketball now. There is no umpire in basketball it is called a ref. I understand why you are explaining about the history of basketball; however, I think it should be more applicable to today.

  3. Hey Jason, so what I did was actually choose just the three rules that I found interesting because they were quite different from todays rules. If you check out the website, actually a lot of the rules do apply to todays rules, but those are not exactly fun to read, so I thought I would choose some interesting ones.

  5. I know their the same and the international three point line is much better than the US three point line, and Spain National team would destroy US's national team.
